College Football Betting: Big Spreads and Midweek Games

College football has far more teams and far wider gaps than the NFL, and the markets show it. We cover how the numbers work, and our picks for every sport are on one page at /picks.

Why spreads can get so large

More than a hundred and thirty top-level programs play, and the gap between the strongest and the weakest is huge. A spread of three touchdowns or more is not unusual when a top program hosts a smaller school.

With a large spread, the moneyline on the favorite becomes very expensive and the underdog moneyline pays a lot. Totals can also run high or low depending on tempo and how teams run the ball.

Home field and conference play

Crowds, travel and familiarity all play a role, and a home field is often worth more in college than many casual fans expect. Books build it into the number, so the question is whether it has been priced fairly.

Early in the year, many games are nonconference matchups between unequal teams. Once league play starts, rivals know each other well, and margins can be tighter than the rankings suggest.

Midweek games and late changes

Most games are on Saturday, but some are played on Tuesday through Friday nights. Those games draw less attention, and a short week can affect rest and preparation.

Rosters are large and injury reporting is looser than in the NFL, so news can arrive late or not at all. A quarterback change on game day can shift a line sharply, and a team's depth may be hard to judge from outside.

  • Check the date and kickoff, since midweek games are easy to miss
  • Look at weather for outdoor stadiums
  • Read recent beat reports for starting quarterbacks
  • Compare numbers across books before betting

Why lines move, and a reminder

Lines move on injuries, weather, and the weight of bets on each side. Because attention is thinner on smaller conferences, some numbers can move quickly on modest volume.

Bets can lose. Nobody should bet money they cannot afford to lose. Bettors must be 21 or older where betting is legal, and 1-800-GAMBLER is the help line.

Questions

Why are college football spreads bigger than NFL spreads?

Talent is spread unevenly across hundreds of teams, so mismatches are common. In the NFL, rosters and the salary cap keep teams closer together.

Does a big spread mean an easy bet?

No. A large number already reflects the gap, and favorites can win without covering. Backup players often enter the game late, which can change the margin.
