Golf Betting Explained: Outrights, Top Finishes and Matchups

A golf event has a big field and four rounds, so the markets work differently from a game with two sides. We cover the main bets below, and our picks for every sport are posted at /picks.

Outrights and long shots

An outright is a bet on one golfer to win the whole tournament. With a field of well over a hundred players, even the favorite is priced at long odds, and most outright bets lose.

Long shots pay a lot because they win rarely. That is why many players treat outrights as small bets and not as the main plan.

Finish markets and matchups

Top-5, top-10 and top-20 markets pay if your golfer finishes inside that position. They hit more often than outrights, and the prices are shorter.

A head-to-head matchup pits two golfers against each other. Some matchups count one round only, and others count all 72 holes. Be sure you know which one you are buying.

Weather, waves and dead heats

Golfers in the early wave can face different wind or rain than those who tee off later, and that can move scoring by several shots. Check the forecast and the tee times before you look at a price.

A dead heat happens when golfers tie for a position. In a top-10 market, for example, if two players tie for tenth, the payout is usually reduced by sharing the stake across the tied players. Your sportsbook explains how in its terms, so read them.

If a golfer withdraws before teeing off, most books refund matchup and finish bets. Terms for a withdrawal mid-round vary.

Playing responsibly

Bets can lose. Nobody should bet money they cannot afford to lose. Bettors must be 21 or older where legal, and 1-800-GAMBLER is the help line.

Questions

What is a dead heat in golf betting?

It is a tie for the position a bet needs. Books usually pay a reduced amount, based on how many players share the spot. Your sportsbook sets the exact settlement.

What is the difference between a round matchup and a 72-hole matchup?

A round matchup settles on one day's score. A 72-hole matchup settles on the total score across the whole tournament, so it depends on all four rounds.
