Line Movement Explained: Why Betting Lines Change

A betting line is not fixed. It can change many times between the day it opens and the moment the game starts. Here is why that happens and what it does and does not tell you.

Why lines move

Sportsbooks change numbers for a few common reasons. None of them is a secret, and most come down to new information or the way bets are arriving.

  • Injury or lineup news, such as a starter ruled out or a pitcher changed
  • Weather, like heavy wind or rain that affects scoring
  • Money coming in on one side, which pushes the book to adjust
  • Books balancing their risk so they do not hold too much on one result

Opening line and closing line

The opening line is the first number a book posts for a game. The closing line is the last number before the game begins, when betting stops.

Say a team opens as a 3 point favorite at -3. During the week a key opponent is ruled out and more bets arrive on the favorite. The book moves the spread to -4. A bettor who took the favorite at -3 needs a win by 4 or more to cover, with a push on exactly 3. At the closing -4, the favorite needs a win by 5 or more. The earlier bettor got the easier number.

Why bettors compare their number to the close

Many bettors save the number they got and look at it again at the close. If they bet -3 and the game closed at -4, the market moved their way. If it closed at -2, it moved against them.

This is only a way to check the price you got. A bet can beat the closing line and still lose, and a bet can lose the closing comparison and still win. One game is just one result.

A moving line guarantees nothing

A line moving toward a team does not mean that team will cover. It only means the number changed. Lines also move back when new news arrives.

Questions

What is the difference between an opening line and a closing line?

The opening line is the first number a book posts. The closing line is the final number when betting stops at the start of the game.

Does a line moving mean the sportsbook made a mistake?

Not usually. Lines move because of news, weather or the amount of money on each side. A move means the market updated.

Should I wait for the line to move before I bet?

There is no rule. The number can move in either direction, so waiting can help or hurt. Check the number and price before you confirm any bet.
