Bankroll Management Basics for Beginners
A bankroll is money you set aside for betting that you can afford to lose. Managing it means deciding in advance how much to risk, so one bad week does not become a bigger problem.

Set the bankroll and the unit
Start with money that is not needed for rent, bills or savings. That is the bankroll. Then pick a unit, which is a small percentage of it. Many people use 1% or 2%.
With a 100 unit bankroll, and a unit worth 1% of it, each bet risks 1 unit. If the bankroll is 500 dollars, one unit is 5 dollars.
A losing streak, worked out
Suppose you start with 100 units and bet 1 unit each time. Ten losses in a row cost 10 units, leaving 90. The bankroll is hurt, but you are still in control.
Now suppose you bet 10 units each time instead. Ten losses in a row cost 100 units, and the bankroll is gone. The size of the bet, not just the streak, decides how much damage a bad run does.
Chasing losses, limits and a simple log
Chasing losses means raising your stake to win back what you lost. It is a trap, because it makes the next loss bigger. Decide your limits before you start and stop when you reach them.
- Set a loss limit for the day, week or month.
- Set a time limit so betting does not take over your day.
- Write every bet in a simple log: date, bet, price, stake and result.
- Use the deposit limits your sportsbook offers.
Where to get help
Bets can lose. Bettors must be 21 or older where betting is legal. Never bet money you need for living costs.

Questions
How big should one unit be?
Many bettors use 1% to 2% of their bankroll. It is a personal choice, and smaller is safer.
Does a bankroll plan stop me from losing?
No. It only limits how much one bad stretch can cost. Bets can still lose.
Why keep a betting log?
A log shows what you have really bet and lost, which memory often gets wrong. It also helps you stay within your limits.
