Same Game Parlay Risks Explained

A same game parlay puts several bets from one game on one ticket. It looks simple and pays well, but the legs are connected, and that changes how the price is built.

What a same game parlay is

It is a parlay where every leg comes from the same game. For example, a team to win, its quarterback to throw over a number of yards, and the game total to go over. Every leg has to win for the ticket to pay.

Why the legs are connected

Legs in one game are not independent. If a team wins by a lot, its running back is more likely to get carries. This link is called correlation.

A normal parlay multiplies the prices of unrelated games. A same game parlay is priced differently, because the book accounts for the link between legs. Two legs that tend to happen together are priced as less rare than the simple math would suggest, so the payout is smaller than the legs would pay on their own. Some combinations are not offered at all.

One miss ends the ticket, and voids matter

If one leg loses, the whole ticket loses, even when the other legs hit. A ticket with four legs needs all four.

If a player does not play, a leg tied to that player is usually voided, and the ticket is repriced without it. Rules differ by sportsbook, so read them before you confirm.

  • More legs mean a bigger payout and a smaller chance that all hit.
  • A single missed leg is enough to lose the full stake.
  • A voided leg lowers the payout because the ticket now has fewer legs.

The honest risk

Tickets with many legs lose most of the time. A large payout shown on the slip reflects how unlikely the full combination is.

Questions

Why is a same game parlay priced differently from a normal parlay?

Because legs in one game are connected. The book adjusts the price to account for that link instead of just multiplying the individual prices.

What happens if a player in my parlay does not play?

Usually that leg is voided and the ticket is repriced with the legs that remain. Check your sportsbook's rules, because they differ.

Are same game parlays a good way to start?

They are harder to hit than single bets, since every leg must win. Many beginners start by learning how single bets and normal parlays work.
