Over/Under Totals Explained for Beginners

A total is a single number for both teams combined. You bet whether the real score ends higher or lower than that number.

How a total works

The book posts a number for combined points, runs or goals. If the total is 47.5, an over bet needs 48 or more combined points. An under bet needs 47 or fewer.

It does not matter who wins the game. A 27-21 final adds up to 48, so the over cashes at 47.5. A 24-20 final adds up to 44, so the under cashes.

Half-points, pushes and overtime

A total with a half-point can never tie. A whole number can. If the total is 47 and the teams score exactly 47 combined, the bet is a push and the stake is returned.

In most US markets, overtime counts toward the total, so extra points can turn an under into an over. Postponed games are usually cancelled with the stake returned. Shortened games vary by book and sport, so check the rules before betting.

Why totals move

Totals shift when conditions change. Wind and rain can lower scoring in football and baseball. A faster pace raises it. A key injury, like a starting quarterback or a goalie, can move the number several points.

  • Weather at an outdoor game
  • Pace of play for both teams
  • Injuries and lineup news
  • Starting pitchers or goalies

Before you place a bet

Look at the number and the price on both sides, since they can differ from book to book.

Questions

Does overtime count for over/under bets?

In most US markets, yes. Points, runs or goals scored in overtime count toward the total. Some soccer markets count regular time only, so read the rules.

What if the total lands exactly on the number?

That is a push. A total of 47 with a 24-23 final is a push, and the stake is returned.

What if a game is postponed or shortened?

Postponed games are normally voided. Shortened games depend on the book and how much was played, so check your sportsbook's rules.
